Perdido Pass Booming System Breaking Down – Orange Beach Alabama

“ORANGE BEACH, Alabama – As the higher storm swell generated by Hurricane Alex hits the Gulf Coast, two lines of defense against the oil are breaking down.

The biggest one is the brand new booming system at Perdido Pass that the City of Orange Beach paid $4.6 million to build.

Gulf’s ‘dead zone’ seems to be growing – USATODAY.com

“The Gulf of Mexico’s ‘dead zone’ may be larger this year than in recent years, as big as the state of New Jersey, scientists say.
The dead zone is created by nutrient runoff, mostly from over-application of fertilizer on agricultural fields. It flows into streams, then rivers and eventually the Gulf. Once there, the fertilizer stimulates an overgrowth of algae that sinks, decomposes and consumes most of the life-giving oxygen in the water, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says.

“Northwest Florida

Oil has affected sections of Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key beaches. A health advisory has been issued for Gulf waters west of the Pensacola Beach fishing pier, according to the Pensacola Bay Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. Visitors are urged to avoid contact with oil on shore and in the water.”

Residents and tourists lured onto Florida beaches despite health warnings

“These seemingly contradictory moves have sent mixed signals to an already ill-informed public and consequently, many residents and tourists were lured onto the beaches – and into the water, last weekend. Before the weekend, 400 people had already sought medical care for upper or lower respiratory problems, headaches, nausea, and eye irritation after trips to Escambia County beaches, said Dr. John Lanza, director of Escambia County Health Department.”
