Pastel artist making his mark from Perdido to Eastern Shore | pnj.com | Pensacola News Journal
“Tommy Vogel, one of the island’s hardest working and most prolific pastel artists is evolving.
The Orange Beach artist can often be found painting or teaching at ArtZ on Canal Road or Artworks on Perdido Key Drive, two galleries that exhibit this up-and-coming artist’s work. Vogel, who works in the often over-looked pastel form sells only originals. It’s that combination of using the underappreciated pastel and originality of a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork that makes this easy going artist standout.
Using pastels may not be living on the edge, but as Vogel explains, you better have forethought.
‘All of my artwork is soft pastel and is all original. I find pastels to be more challenging than other mediums. With pastels you don’t have the luxury of painting over or changing, so you need to be sure of what you want to do before you start,’ Vogel said. ‘I learn a new technique or a different way of working with pastels with every picture I do. The vibrancy of the colors draws as much attention as the subject or style in a picture.’”
